Sungai Bernam (Tanjung Malim)
Sungai Bernam is a beautiful river at the upstream of the Bernam river, which separates the states of Selangor and Perak. Most of the river is a public area, therefore there is no entrance fee. The trek to Lubuk Kawah waterfalls also starts around here.
On normal weekdays, the place is quiet and peaceful – perfect for a quick refreshing dip. On weekends and holidays, it gets rather crowded, and the two resorts nearby the river (i) Teratak Riverview Resort and (ii) Warisan Bernam Heritage Agro Resort gets quite jam-packed with families and school/college students on rombongan (excursion trips). 🙂
The entire place is serene and surrounded by lush forests. Water is beautifully clear and greenish in colour. Some activities to do here are swimming, fishing, as well as jungle/waterfall trekking (arrange for guides with the resorts).
Also, there are schools of small fishes by the riverbank, and although they are rather shy and swim away when you tread in their way; they will not hesitate to come near you when you throw food in the water (can be anything, like rice/bits of chicken/bread), and take turns nibbling on it. Adorable to watch! 🙂
A lizard (species unknown); which we spotted on a tree nearby the TRV.
Insects (not sure of species’ ID) that we spotted by the river. 🙂

HOW TO GET THERE BY CAR (FROM KL):
From KL, take the North-South Expressway from Jalan Duta and head towards Tanjung Malim (Exit 121).
Once EXIT 115 (after toll booth), look out for the signboard pictured below and take the 2nd left turning into Persimpangan Tanjung Malim (Tanjung Malim, Ipoh, UPSI).
Go straight all the way. After a bridge, you will see the entrance signboard to Sungai Gading on your right. Drive a little further on until you reach a safe junction to u-turn. If possible, remember to stop by the Yik Mun Pao Shop (famous for their char siew paos) nearby the u-turn. 🙂
After the u-turn, there will be a narrow access road (about 4km). Drive along this road and you will see the river (adjacent to the road). Take note that there are no designated parking lots, so you may have to park simply by the roadside. Take note that the roads here are mostly broken due to the heavy use by the 4WDs.
Drive further till the end and you will see Teratak Riverview Resort and Warisan Bernam Heritage Agro Resort.
